| The Vega archipelago reflects the way
generations of fishermen/farmers have, over the past 1500 years,
maintained a sustainable living in an inhospitable seascape near
the Arctic Circle, based on the now unique practice of eider down
harvesting, and it also celebrate the contribution made by women to
the eider down process.." (UNESCO World Heritage
Committee) |
Nestling in an open seascape with over 6500
islands, low-lying islets and inlets, the Vega islands are exposed
to everything from dead calm summer sunshine to hurricanes from the
west. The islanders have always had to live according to the
weather out here. We are based in the southern part of the
Helgeland coast, renowned as one of the best kayak destinations in
Europe. Our guide May-Britt Trondsen will accompany us throughout
the trip. She was born and raised here, and along with Sverre
Nilsen runs Vega Opplevelsesferie. We will head north through the
archipelago to Omnøya, where Sverre was born and raised.
"Dønnamannen" will be our landmark in the distance.
From the town of Nes on Vega, we will proceed to Omnøy. This is
the place where Sverre Nilsen (Vega Opplevelsesferie) was born and
raised. The first stage will involve some open water and after 2-3
hours paddling, we will take a break and enjoy a meal (May-Britt's
home-baked fishcakes) on an island which was inhabited from the
1700s to around 1950, where we will hear a little about life on the
islands from that period. The trip will then proceed between
islets, inlets and narrow sounds, passing several old settlements.
In the distance, we will be able to see Dønnamannen, the Seven
Sisters and the Vega mountains. After another 2-3 hours paddling we
will land on Omnøy. We will take the kayaks safely above the high
tide mark to huts, where we will stay the night. We can dry our
gear here and maybe even take a shower before settling down to eat
around a steaming pot of Ømnsøy-Baccalao and reminisce over the
day's events.
