The kayaks glide smoothly through the narrow sound with a
bottom of coral sand which give the water its colour of bright
azure blue. I get the feeling of being way down south somewhere and
have to dip a hand into the fresh, clear water to remind myself I
am north of the Arctic Circle.

In the winters of the past, when southern fishermen
visited Lofoten, they moored their boats in the lee of these
islets, hoping that the Vestfjord would let them cross in small
open rowboats. The sturdy moorings are still there to see in the
rock as historic reminders and the Lofotveggen can still be
glimpsed as a light blue mirage out there, just as it could then.
We sail our kayaks through the historic surroundings of Engeløya,
Løvøya and Burøya. There is plentiful evidence of settlements here
going right back to the stone and bronze ages, and Engeløya was a
seat of power as far back as the Viking times.
A pair of sea eagles take off right in front of us. I try to snap
a photograph of them - but too late. Should be more chances later
though. We are in an area of Norway with the densest population of
these wonderful birds.
