A German visitor told us that the superlatives needed to

A German visitor told us that the superlatives needed to
describe Sørøya have not yet been invented! And yes, it is
difficult. Therefore we write some facts about the anual fishing
festival:
The Sørøy-festival, Sørøya′s annual deep-sea fishing festival
organised by the
local deep-sea fishing club, is not only known for the biggest
catches per participant, but also the largest fish of all Nordic
festivals. During the Sørøy-festival of 1999 Asgeir Alvestad caught
482kg cod, coalfish, and haddock in 5 hours! The biggest cod caught
during the festival was 25kg.
Note! For the anglers′ convenience we use boats for 4 to 6
people only.
The cod is on the average 5-10kg. which means cod of 10-20 kg
are caught all the time. Cod of over 20kg can not be guaranteed,
but there is no place you are more likely to get one than at
Sørøya. Mr. Geir Henriksen holds the local record with a cod of
37.5 kg. Actually we should say cods as Geir already touched his
own record once.
Local fishermen say cod of 40 - 50 kg. are caught in the area
just outside Sørvær. Wouldn′t you like to go for them!………
Other standard weights of fish that you
are likely to come across in these waters:
Haddock 2-4 kg
Coalfish (Pollack) 1-12 kg
Norway haddock 1-3 kg
Halibut 10-80 kg
Spotted Catfish 10-20 kg
