Trip to Skjærværet
A cloudy, quiet day in August - and we look forward to the trip
from Nes with Sverre and his
boat. Warm suits are handed out and we leave the idyllic
small harbor on Nes, heading out towards the World Heritage area.
Sverre tells about the
settlement, the fishing and how they lived their lives here.
The seagulls and the cormorants are following the boat.
We pass the Hysværet - with its well-preserved houses, the old
school and the
farms around. We see the eider duck houses everywhere on the
islands, and with Sverres help we saw an eider duck mom with her
kids.
The endpoint for this trip is Skjærværet. The Chief Inspector of
Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings hold a
strict hand over this area. Sverre
shows us the - feeding grounds and houses(!) to one cow, the
houses to the sheep and the chickens, the small barn - each house
has its own function. The Black Guillemot Colony which is at the
pier, drives around or hazards energetic around in the water.
A perfect place to eat your packed lunch!
The world's largest colony of cormorant is on an island close by,
it stands on the pillars and dries its wings in their typical way.
Because of the shallow water in this area, there are many poles to
show you the way out. On the trip back Sverre makes a stop for
fishing, and it takes only a minute before mackerel and haddock are
on the fishhook. It's fun!
Sverre navigate us safely and knowledgeable for several hours
between the islands, a fantastic experience from the beginning to
the end!
